something a little different

I bought this old trombone case at a garage sale a few weeks ago. Most of the leather (or fake leather, I'm not really sure) had already come off. At first I thought it was wood underneath but I quickly realized its compressed cardboard. Even so, I can sand it a lot like I would wood and get a nice surface to prime. I'm working on getting the rest of the leather off from around the edges and sanding the surface smooth. Then I'll prime it with white gesso and paint it. This is a new type of project for me so I'm excited and having fun with it but I have no idea what the finished project will look like. My goal is to paint a picture that will span both sides so that you can set it upright and prop it open and see the whole thing.
